(HealthDay News) — Stress fractures are small breaks in a bone caused by overuse from exercise.
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says risk factors include:
- Playing sports, including tennis and basketball.
- Participating in athletic events, such as gymnastics and track and field.
- Moving in a way that the foot repeatedly hits the ground.
- Resting insufficiently between workouts.
- Being female.
