Health Tip: Gear up for Sports

(HealthDay News) — Playing on a team is a great way for kids to learn sportsmanship and to get exercise. But it’s also important to take precautions aimed at reducing the risk of injury.

The Safekids.org website advises parents to:

  • Make sure children get a physical exam before playing.
  • Pack a water bottle during practice and games, encouraging kids to drink frequently.
  • Promote stretching before practice and games to reduce the risk of muscle injury.
  • Ask if coaches are certified in CPR and first aid. Coaches also should be familiar with the signs of concussion and how to prevent overuse injuries.
