(HealthDay News) — To help reduce your risk of a back injury, start with living a healthier lifestyle.
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons offers these suggestions to help protect your back:
- Get plenty of regular exercise. Alternate cardiovascular exercises with those designed to strengthen the back and abdominals.
- Avoid gaining extra weight, which adds stress to the lower back and spine.
- Don’t smoke, which can lead to premature aging of the spine.
- Practice good posture; stand, sit and lift objects appropriately.
